St Albans Middle Distance is very excited about the 2019 Championship races. Below is information on the events and how to enter one, two or three races!

We would love it if all our athletes are able to take part in the Hertfordshire Championships as we are hosting this event in St Albans!

The Southern Championships event is at Parliament Hill in Hampstead this year and very accessible by public transport so we hope those of you old enough will give it a go.

All members above the minimum age specified are able to enter both these events and you will find a mix of ability levels. We will have team coaches present at both events to help with course familiarisation and warm up.

The Nationals is a fantastic race but the 2019 venue is north of Leeds and so will be long journey. We would be delighted if any athletes want to run in the Nationals but unfortunately we will not be able to provide transport due to the high costs.

We do recommend that if you wish to take part in any of these events you attend a minimum of two club sessions a week or the equivalent elsewhere. If you can only attend one group session then add your own run into your training schedule.

How to enter the Championship races
To enter any of the Championship races please click here. To help with the admin please enter as soon as possible or, at the latest, before Thursday 6th December.

On the entry form please select the races you wish to take part in and then you will be transferred to the payment page which will let you pay via PayPal or debit/credit card. Only fully paid entries will be processed.

Athletes who are in the U11 age group will not need an England Athletics number but all runners over that age will do. EA numbers are organised by the Club when an athlete joins up – if you have any problems with this please email our Membership Secretary.

Please note that the entry fees are not refundable to us from the race organisers. So unfortunately if you enter and pay for any races and are then unable to take part we are not able to provide a refund.

We would appreciate if all our regular Cross Country athletes would complete the entry form, even if you are not available to run in any of the races – please tick all the ‘NO’ boxes and click submit. This will help us avoid chasing athletes unnecessarily.

More information about each event is below and a table of run distances and start times can be seen by clicking here.

Hertfordshire XC County Championships

  • Verulamium Park, St Albans

  • Sunday 6th January 2019  9.30am – 2.30pm

  • Entry Cost £5

  • U11 / School Year 5 & upwards

This event is smaller than a Chiltern League Race as only Hertfordshire residents can take part – and we have a great track record of winning teams across age groups. Please don’t be put off by the name and afraid to try this race if you are new to XC – it’s a perfect first-timers event. Given we are hosts we would appreciate if all our members could prioritise attendance at this race over other sports and at least one family member volunteer to help marshal at the event.   Three per team to score.  Top finishers at this event (U13 & above) have to chance to be invited to represent Hertfordshire at the Inter-County Championships on 9th March in Loughborough.

Southern Counties XC Championships

  • Parliament Hill, Hampstead, London

  • Saturday 26th January 10am – 4pm

  • Entry Cost £7

  • U13 / School Year 7 & upwards

Given it is so close this year – we would suggest as many members as possible enter. The iconic course at Parliament Hill is challenging and the terrain is different every year depending on recent weather. You are guaranteed to feel a great sense of achievement completing this event overlooking the London skyline. Great for creating memories! 4 in a team to score, 6 in Senior Men’s team to score. Public Transport – Train or Underground recommended – Hampstead Heath is readily accessible from the tube and train stations – so you can compress your day to suit the times of those running. Just remember to pack bin bags and spare clothes & footwear.

National XC Championships

  • Harewood House, Near Leeds, Yorkshire

  • Saturday 23rd February 10am – 4pm

  • Entry Cost £8

  • U13 / School Year 7 & upwards

Whilst this is a competitive event with some amazingly fast runners, there is a complete mix of abilities and over the last few years members of all abilities have enjoyed competing at National Champs and gained valuable experience. 4 in a team to score with the exception of Junior Women – 3 to score & Senior Men’s 6 to score.

We are not providing transport to Leeds for the race as it would be such a long a day and so is too expensive. We recommend car share in age groups if you are going. We hope to have a middle distance coach there for some of the day at least but this is not guaranteed.

Championship Age Groups, Distances & Start Times
The timetables and distances for the 3 Cross Country events can be seen by clicking here.

Please note age groups are as per usual like Chiltern League with the exception of U20 Junior Men & Women – which are age 17,18, & 19 at 31st August 2018.
