We hope you are all looking forward to the start of the cross country season! Below is important information for all athletes and parents or guardians of any members who think they would like to take part in a cross country race this season.
1. FIXTURES CALENDAR
Please click here to see the fixture calendar.
Please review the calendar and decide in which races you would like to compete. As a Club we take part in the Chiltern League series of 5 races. These races are open to all athletes in Year 5 and above and are a fantastic introduction to XC running. We have coaches at the event to help with warm up and the course reccie. Everybody who finishes the race scores for the Club wherever they come and we encourage everybody to have a go.
We attend Counties, Southern and Nationals Championships as well as National Team Relay Championships. These races are open to all members in Year 7 and up and we enter teams as a Club, several weeks / months in advance. When the race is a long drive we have a team coach from St Albans which athletes and family can use for a small charge.
2. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO NOW?
a. National Cross Country Relays – please confirm your availability by Sunday 7th October
The National Cross Country Relays is a team event, where each club enters teams of 3 athletes per age group. We can enter up to 3 teams per age group – i.e. 9 people.
This year’s race is on Saturday 3rd November in Mansfield. A coach will be available for a small charge from Westminster Lodge to Mansfield and back. It is a full day out!
If you would like to be considered for one of the teams please click here to visit our registration form so we know you are available. It is essential that you use this form to be considered – the deadline is this Sunday, 7th October.
If you usually complete for the club but are not available it would be useful for us if you could complete the form and select the option to indicate that you are not able to run.
We will try to include as many athletes as possible in the teams we submit and will let you know who has been selected in about 14 days.
b. Chiltern League Cross Country Races – please confirm if you plan to take part
To compete for St Albans AC in Chiltern League races, you need to be a member of the Club and, if aged 11 or above, you need an England Athletics number (EAN) for your results and scores to be recorded. The Club takes care of this when athletes join the Club and your EAN will be sent to you. If you cannot find your EAN it can be looked up on the England Athletics Licence Checker or contact our Membership Secretary.
We need to enter all athletes who may want to run on to the Chiltern League database and it makes life a lot easier if we do as many of these entries as possible in advance. So if you think you are likely to take part in any of the Chiltern League races this season please can you complete the Chiltern League registration form.
If you are running at the Oxford Chiltern League race on 13 October the deadline to complete the form is next Tuesday, 9 October. If you are not running at Oxford but plan to run in other Chiltern League races please complete the form by next Tuesday anyway!
Please note that you need to arrive one hour before your race time at the St Albans AC table and register with our Team Manager. The race times for the Oxford race can be seen by clicking here.
3. COUNTY CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
The County XC Championships are on Sunday 6th January at Verulamium Park! Please put the date in your diary. We are very pleased to be the hosts for this year’s Championships.
We hope to see all our members running on the day but will also need a large team of volunteers before, during and after the race. We would like all parents and athletes to volunteer for at least one slot on the day or before the day if you are unable to help on the day. Look out for more news in a few weeks. In the meantime please contact us if you are able to volunteer.
4. STAY CONNECTED
We will post all fixture details, maps, specific training and entry links on the Club website so please do check this on a regular basis in case you miss an email!
We also use Facebook for communication – so suggest you join these groups:
5. CHECK YOUR KIT!
Anyone aged 11 and over competing for the club in a cross country event, will need a current St Albans AC club vest which we introduced last season. In the past we have had a few people arriving and having to beg team mates if they could borrow their muddy / wet vest – so if you plan to run can we ask you order your vest now or check your existing one still fits! New vests are at a subsided rate £10 until 12th October and can be ordered by clicking here to visit the Club kit page.
Similarly, with footwear – now is the time to check your shoes still fit and are ready for mud, glorious mud! Please don’t turn up with your spikes covered in the mud from last March as they are likely to be growing! Believe us – mentioning no names we have seen this several times! For first timers, you can wear trainers with a good tread but we advise if you plan to do a few races, a pair of XC spikes or XC-specific trail trainers would be better. We have a Club discount with Runners World in Marshalswick and they can help you get the right size – just mention that you are a Club member to get the discount.
We appreciate that many of you juggle a multitude of different sports and fitting everything in is difficult. There are 4 Club training sessions per week and we recommend that if you plan to compete in races you attend a minimum of 2 Club sessions a week and if you can only do one, you add your own run into your training schedule. Please contact one of the coaches if you need more advice / help with planning your training schedule.
Please see the Club website for current training times due to track refurbishment…
