NEW MEMBERS GUIDE
Dear New Athlete,
Welcome to St. Albans Athletic Club! I am sure you will enjoy your time with us and learn many valuable skills. Our Club is first and foremost a family club founded in 1989 by a group of enthusiastic parents. Since then many of us, including older athletes, have taken coaching or officiating awards (or both) and have continued to support the club and athletes like you even though our own children have long since moved on.
There is an emphasis on Track and Field during the summer and Cross Country during the winter months. However, our main aim is for you enjoy your athletics, whatever your capability, in a controlled and safe environment. Our team of dedicated coaches are all volunteers. Please treat your coaches with respect, listen carefully to their guidance and follow their instructions. This is important for the safety of you and your fellow athletes as well as helping you improve your performance. Please visit our Training page to find out about our training sessions.
We currently compete in four leagues:
- Eastern Young Athletes League (EYAL) for under 13s through to the under 17 age group for both boys and girls. Each participating club provides up to two scoring athletes in each track and field event. This is a great starting point for competition as you can take part in up to three events plus the relay. Plenty of athletes take the opportunity to practise as a non-scoring competitor which gives the coaches and team managers something to work on when selecting teams.
- Southern Athletics League (SAL) is aimed at the over 17’s (although U17’s can also take part). This is also a great introduction to senior track and field competition.
- Veterans League – as its name suggests is aimed at athletes of a certain age! This is a fun evening track and field league held during the summer and gives an opportunity for older athletes and parents who want to have a go at athletics.
- Chiltern Cross Country League in which we compete as a combined team with our sister Club, St. Albans Striders is for all ages from under 11s through to veterans. These competitions take place over the autumn/winter months and will help build team spirit, strength and stamina.
