Would you like to get involved with the St Albans Striders Olympic Park Summer Relay? If so, read on…

Back in 2012 Striders, to celebrate the Olympic Games, organised our own relay to the Olympic Park, or as close as we could get to at the time.  We tried to organise one last year to coincide with the World Athletic Championships to repeat this great day out.  Unfortunately, we didn’t start organising early enough and there weren’t enough people available on the chosen date.  The committee has suggested that we try again this year to coincide with the Athletics World Cup.  We will be running the same route as the Olympic relay on Saturday 14th July, this time going all the way to the Olympic Park.

The route consisted of five 7 to 8 mile legs, running roughly south from St Albans mostly off road, following some of Hertfordshire and North London’s long-distance paths, until we reach Primrose Hill where we join the Grand Union Canal all the way to the Olympic Park.  The legs are as follows;

Leg One: start at Westminster Lodge mainly following the River Ver and the Colne Valley Walk, then a short section of the Hertfordshire Way to the first change over at Round Bush near Aldenham.

Leg Two: from Aldenham it heads to Aldenham Country Park, along a short section of the Aldenham parkrun course and then Mill Hill Golf Course before crossing over the A1 and picking up the London Loop for change over number two near Barnet Gate.

Leg Three: continues east following sections of the London Loop and Dollis Valley Green Walk before heading south again to change over three near Hendon.

Leg Four: carries on south, runs east parallel with the North Circular for a while, following the Capital Ring and then heads south again via Big Wood, Hampstead Heath with great views of Central London.  Then the longest road section through Belsize Park to Primrose Hill, again great views before dropping down to the Regents Canal for change over four.

Leg Five: the final leg follows the Regents Canal via Camden Market to Victoria Park where we then follow the Hertford Union Canal all the way to the Olympic Park.

Last time as we were using a coach we had to leave as soon as we got there, as the driver was running out of driving time.  This time we plan to use minibuses, driven by Strider volunteers so we can be more flexible and get to spend some time in the Olympic Park.

Everyone that took part in 2012 said it was a fantastic day out and a great thing for the club to do to bring everyone together.  Hence, we are doing it again.

The first leg will leave Westminster Lodge promptly at 8am with the aim to get to the Olympic park by about 4:00 to 4:30, spend as hour / hour and a half in the park and then head for home about 6pm.  There will be options for to leave earlier if you wish.  For the latter legs, you will not need to catch your mini bus until later in the day.  I expect the last one will leave Westminster Lodge at about 1:00 ish, to be confirmed.

So what we need now is for you to get in touch with;

  • which leg or legs you would like to do,
  • your happy running pace, it is not a race and there will be stops along each leg to keep everyone together,
  • if you are happy to lead a group or be back marker
  • and if you are happy to drive a minibus.

There will be a £18:00 charge to help cover the cost of the transport and the wonderful commemorative t-shirt, based on the design above.
